How to Choose an SEO Agency in India: 12 Questions to Ask Before You Hire

By the Growth Dash team · 8 min read

India has thousands of SEO agencies, from solo freelancers to large firms, and quality varies enormously. A good partner can become a growth engine; a poor one can waste a year and even damage your site. These twelve questions help you tell the difference.

Before you start: know what you want

Write down your goal in business terms, for example more enquiries per month, higher online sales or entry into a new country. Agencies that ask about this early tend to be better than those that jump straight to a package list.

The 12 questions

1. Can you guarantee a number one ranking?

The right answer is no. Google controls rankings, and no agency can promise a position. Treat guarantees as a red flag, especially for competitive keywords or very short timeframes.

2. How will you measure success?

Look for leads, calls, sales and revenue from organic search, not only rankings and traffic. Ask how tracking will be set up and who owns the analytics accounts.

3. What will you do in the first 90 days?

A credible agency can describe an audit, strategy, quick fixes and a roadmap. Vague answers or generic package lists suggest they apply the same template to everyone.

4. How do you build links?

Good answers mention relevant outreach, digital PR, useful assets and partnerships. Avoid agencies that mention bulk directory submissions, private blog networks or paid link packages, which can lead to penalties.

5. Who will actually work on my account?

Ask whether you will deal with the people doing the work, and how communication and reporting happen. Large teams can be fine, but you should know who is accountable.

6. Can you share examples relevant to my industry?

Real case studies with starting points, actions and verified outcomes are valuable. Be sceptical of unnamed claims with no context. Reputable agencies are often willing to explain their method even when client names are confidential.

7. How do you handle content?

Content should be original, accurate and written for your customers. Ask about subject-matter review, editing and how AI tools are used. Mass-produced generic content rarely helps.

8. Will you work on AI search visibility too?

Buyers increasingly research with AI assistants. A forward-looking agency will explain how it approaches this, honestly and without guaranteeing citations. Read more in our guide to GEO, AEO and SEO.

9. What do I own at the end?

You should own your website, content, analytics, search console and ad accounts. Avoid contracts that lock you in or hold assets hostage.

10. What are the contract terms?

Check minimum terms, notice periods, deliverables and what happens if targets are missed. Reasonable agencies are open about this.

11. How do you report and how often?

Regular, clear reports should explain what was done, what happened and what comes next, in language you understand.

12. What would you not recommend for me?

This question reveals honesty. A good agency will tell you what to skip, such as targeting a keyword that is too competitive for your budget or investing in a channel that does not suit your business.

Red flags to watch for

  • Guaranteed rankings or instant results.
  • Extremely low prices for full-service SEO, which often means templated work and shortcuts.
  • No access to your analytics or Search Console.
  • Refusing to explain methods because they are secret.
  • Pressure to sign quickly.

What agency pricing in India typically depends on

Prices vary by scope, competition and the experience of the team, and any specific figure you see online is only a rough guide. Compare proposals by what is included: audit depth, number and type of content pieces, link building approach, reporting and the level of senior input.

If you are targeting customers abroad

Many Indian businesses also want customers in the USA, UK, Canada or Australia. Confirm that the agency understands local search behaviour, spelling and regulations in those markets. See how we plan for the Indian and US markets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Look for clear explanations of methods, relevant examples, transparent reporting, no guaranteed-ranking claims and the ability to explain what they will and will not do.

It depends on scope. Freelancers can suit small, focused tasks, while agencies offer a wider range of skills, such as technical, content, links and paid media, under one roof.

Because SEO takes months to show results, many engagements run six months or more, but you should still have clear deliverables and sensible notice terms.

Very low prices often mean generic work or risky shortcuts. Compare scope and quality, not only price.
